‘Havala’ traders’ strike enters second week

KABUL (SW) – The nationwide strike by forex traders and ‘havala’ dealers has entered second week.

Haji Zeerak, a member of the leadership council of the National Association of Money Changers of Afghanistan, told Salam Watandar that after 11 days, the problems of money changers are still there and the officials of Da Afghanistan Bank have not taken any steps to solve them. He said he had met with a number of other officials to resolve the issue, but to no avail.

However, Zeerak said the strike would continue until the money changers’ current work permits were renewed. He hinted if their licenses were renewed now, they would be able to obtain licenses in a few years.

The strike has also led to price-hike of some commodities.

Salam Watandar tried to get Da Afghanistan Bank’s opinion on the matter, but Haseebullah Noori, the bank’s media chief did not respond to repeated calls.

DAB has been urging ‘havala’ traders to set up companies and provide these services with an advanced digital system to customers.
