Rehmani concerned over security of the Bactrian-era gold reserves

KABUL (SW) – Mir Rehman Rehmani, speaker of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Wednesday expressed concerns over security of the Bactrian era national gold reserves in the country.

Rahmani and a number of WJ members said during the plenary session that these gold reserves, which backs up Afghanistan’s currency, are in jeopardy and there was no guarantee these might not be smuggled out through the Hamid Karzai International Airport.

Expressing distrust over the competence of the Da Afghanistan Bank leadership, Rahmani emphasized that these gold reserves should be transferred to one of the most reputable countries.

The Bactrian-era gold reserves were put on display in 13 western countries few years back that earned the country around AFN 350 million. The deposits were unearthed in the Tila Teppa area of Jawzjan province over 40 years ago.

Preparations are underway to stage another series of exhibitions of these monuments in connection with the Buddhist, Islamic and other civilizations on the historic Silk Road.
