President Ghani and Abdullah underline importance of ceasefire

 

KABUL (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met Abdullah Abdullah, chairman of the High Council of National Reconciliation, to discuss the developments regarding the peace process.

According to a statement issued by the presidency, during the meeting, which was also attended by the Vice Presidents and Hamdullah Mohib, National Security Adviser, the two sides discussed recent developments in the peace process and regional issues.

It added the two leaders expressed concerns over the escalation of violence in the country and stressed the need for a permanent ceasefire.

The meeting came on the heels of a stalled peace parley between the Taliban and the government representatives in the Qatari capital, Doha. A number of government’s negotiating team members have said that the Taliban are reluctant to continue negotiations.

Prior to the meeting, Abdullah had said that although the intra-Afghan dialogue has not progressed as expected and no agreement has been reached on reducing violence or the ceasefire, but he has not given up hope.
