KABUL (SW) – The Supreme Court confirmed on Sunday two female judges were shot dead in Kabul by unknown assailants.

According to the Supreme Court spokesman, Ahmad Faheem Qoyem, the driver carrying the female judges got injured in this attack.

Spokesman for the Kabul police, Firdaus Faramarz, said the incident took place in the Qala Fatehullah area at around 08:30 a.m.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

This comes amid an alarming surge in targeted assassinations across the country.

The attack has been widely condemned.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani called it as a terrorist attack. “The terrorist attack by the Taliban and other terrorist groups against our defenseless compatriots and the violence against them is contrary to Islamic guidance”, he said in a statement while urging the insurgents to accept a permanent ceasefire. “The government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan reiterates its call on the Taliban that violence and terror are not the solution”, the statement said.

The US Embassy in Kabul also condemned the assassination of the two women judges. Ross Wilson, Chargé d’Affaires to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, said in a statement the United States condemns the assassinations of female supreme court judges. “The Taliban should understand that such actions for which it bears responsibility outrage the world and must cease if peace is to come to Afghanistan”, he tweeted.
