President Ghani Okays continuing intra-Afghan talks in Qatar

KABUL (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has approved the continuation of second round of intra-Afghan talks in Doha, Qatar.

This was said by Waheed Omar, director general public and strategic affairs. He said that although President Ghani had agreed to continue the second round of peace talks in Doha, the next steps would be taken inside Afghanistan.

He said the president had agreed to continue the second round of talks in Doha at the request and advice of the government’s peace delegation, the High Council of National Reconciliation and international partners, and to avoid delays in peace talks.

Separately, the HCNR has said in a statement that countries hosting the peace talks had expressed support for the continuation of peace talks in Qatar due to the fears about spread of the corona virus.

Abdullah Abdullah, head of the HCNR, has said also confirmed the second round of peace talks would be held in Doha, Qatar.

Earlier in the day, President Ghani met with Abdullah Abdullah for discussion over the intra-Afghan negotiations.

According to a statement issued by the presidency, during the meeting, the two discussed the status and timing of the next round of peace talks with the Taliban. “The Afghan government, together with the Afghanistan Peace Process Support Group, will advance the next stages of the peace talks,” President Ghani said during the meeting.

The first round of intra-Afghan peace talks held in Doha, the capital of Qatar, concluded earlier this month with both sides announcing a three-week pause.
