MPs call for action against First Lady

KABUL (SW) – A recent interview of the First Lady Rula Ghani caused an uproar in the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Monday as members called for action.

A female member of the house Razia Mangal urged the speaker to defend the pride of the house in the wake of the remarks made by the First Lady during this interview. She charged that the remarks have disrespected and undermined the honor of the house.

MPs also called for forming a committee to take the matter forward, and suggest a line of action in this regard.

Ghulam Hussaiin Nasiri, another MP, said on the occasion that the First Lady should either publicly apologize for her remarks or her citizenship should be revoked.

In his remarks, speaker Mir Rehman Rehmani said no one has the right to dictate MPs on the matter of vote of confidence for cabinet members. He urged President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani to introduce replacements for the cabinet ministers who failed to earn vote of confidence.

This comes days after the First Lady in an interview charged MPs for political horse-trading and turning the parliament into trading estate for votes for ministers.
