President Ghani seeks support for Covid-19 vaccination in Afghanistan

 

KABUL (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has sought support from WHO, UNICEF and international lenders for corona vaccine in Afghanistan.

According to a statement issued by the presidency, he spoke online with the heads of the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank for Afghanistan, officials of the World Health Organization and UNICEF last evening. It added President Ghani called discussed the implementation of the first phase of the Covid-19 pandemic in Afghanistan with them.

The statement added that the President described the fight against the second wave of the coronavirus as one of the top priorities of the Afghan government. It stated the Afghan President was assured officials of these institutions about the financial commitment to finance the first phase of the Covid-19 vaccine, which is to be implemented by the Government of Afghanistan with the assistance of the World Bank.

At this online meeting, President Ghani expressed concern about the unfulfilled commitments of the organizations working with the Ministry of Public Health during the first phase of the fight against the coronavirus.

President Ghani visited the Afghan-Japanese Hospital in Kabul last month. Back then, he said the hospital was still in dire need of medical equipment and facilities.

According to statistics by the MoPH, more than 152,000 people across the country have undergone coronavirus tests so far. Statistics from the ministry showed that 46,980 people have been infected with the virus so far, and 1,822 have lost their lives as a result. Since the beginning of the spread of coronavirus in the country, 37,026 people have been treated after being infected.
