FM Atmar meets his Pakistani counterpart in Niger 

MONITORING (SW) – The foreign minister of Afghanistan and Pakistan on Friday reiterated the resolve to work together towards peace and further strengthen bilateral relations.

Afghan foreign minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar met his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi in Niamey, Niger on the sidelines of Organization for Islamic Cooperation conference, official statement said on Friday.

“Had an important meeting with HE @SMQureshiPTI and the delegation on the sideline of the #OIC in Niamey focusing on the next steps in peace, security, refugee return, regional connectivity and economic cooperation following the successful Kabul visit of Honourable @ImranKhanPTI”, Atmar tweeted after the meeting.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, during the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on Afghan peace process and measures to further strengthen Pakistan-Afghanistan bilateral relations. “The Foreign Minister also stressed the importance of reduction in violence leading to ceasefire to save lives and advance peace efforts”, it said.

Reiterating Pakistan’s role in the Afghan peace process, it said Qureshi conveyed that Pakistan will continue to facilitate the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned process. Noting the recent progress in Intra-Afghan negotiations, he also emphasized the need to remain vigilant about the role of ‘spoilers’ who did not wish to see return of peace in the region, said the statement.
