KABUL (SW) – The Ministry of Higher Education has announced that according to a cabinet decision, the country’s universities will be closed from the 28th of November.

The move is aimed at curbing spread of the coronavirus amid second wave of the pandemic.

Hamed Obaidi, a spokesman for the Ministry of Higher Education, said on Saturday that the closure of the universities had been proposed to the cabinet by the Ministry of Health a week ago and was approved on Saturday. Obaidi said that in order to prevent the spread of the second wave of coronavirus, universities will be closed and online courses will continue.

The spokesman for the Ministry of Higher Education said there were six weeks of studies left in the current semester. According to him, the students will attend their classes in absentia during these six weeks.

The Ministry of Health has been warning of a second wave of COVID-19 in Afghanistan for a while now. Two days ago, the head of the Ministry of Health said that the number of patients referred to the country’s hospitals has increased tenfold.

In the latest case, health officials in Herat say seven people have died of the disease overnight.
