Ghani says Qur’an, Sharia should form basis of intra-Afghan dialogue

KABUL (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has said that the Qur’an and Sharia should form the basis of intra-Afghan dialogue.

He said this addressing a ceremony to mark the birthday of Prophet Mohammad peace be upon him. Ghani said the Taliban have been claiming their fight for years was for the sake of religion, but have now based their agreement on peace with the United States as foundation for intra-Afghan talks.

The President called on the Taliban to renounce violence and make the Sharia as the basis of intra-Afghan dialogue. He also called on the group to speak with Afghan religious scholars.

Ghani stressed the government was committed to uphold Islamic values and the Afghan security forces were serving the nation under Islamic principles.

This comes amid deadlock in talks between representatives of the Afghan government and the Taliban over agenda and conflict resolution mechanism.

It has been more than a month since the preliminary peace talks began for the formal start of the intra-Afghan talks in Doha, but so far the contact groups of the delegations of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban have failed to begin the official intra-Afghan dialogue.
