5 members of a family killed in landmine blast in Kandahar

KANDAHAR CITY (SW) – At least five members of one family got killed in a landmine blast in southern Kandahar province, an official confirmed on Thursday.

According to the spokesman for police headquarters, Jamal Nasir Barakzai, the incident took place in the Karez area of Maiwand district. He said a women, three children and a man lost their lives in this incident.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Earlier this week, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said in a report that 2,117 civilians got killed and 3,822 others got injured from 1 January to 30 September 2020 here. A graphic illustration of the type of harm caused to civilians in Afghanistan is the fact that more than four out of every ten civilian casualties are children or women. Child casualties amounted to 31 per cent of all civilian casualties in the first nine months of 2020, and women casualties 13 per cent.
