WJ approves draft resolution for amendment in the ID card

KABUL (SW) – The Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Wednesday approved a draft resolution for amendments in the new identity cards.

The draft, ratified by some 60 MPs suggested that the salaries and wages of government employees, retirees, people with disabilities and the families of martyrs be processed on the basis of old identity cards.

Nilofar Ebrahimi, a member of the house, tweeted that the draft amendment would now be submitted to the internal security commission for follow-up.

The draft states that the second paragraph of Article 6 of the Population Registration Law should be amended. It is also stated the name, father’s name, grandfather’s name, place of birth, main residence and current residence should be written in the official languages ​​of the country and its English text should be the same as Persian and Pashto.

In this draft, it is proposed to stop the distribution of the new electronic ID cards until the steps suggested in this draft are implemented. According to this draft, the card holder’s ethnicity and religion shall not be marked on the face of the identity card.

It is worth mentioning that the process of distributing electronic ID cards is currently underway based on the decree of President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani.
