JALALABAD (SW) – At least 11 women lost their lives in a stampede at Pakistan visa token collection spot in Jalalabad, an official confirmed on Wednesday.

Gul Zada Sangar, spokesman for the regional hospital in Nangarhar told Salam Watandar that the incident took place in an open ground in the city where thousands of people had gathered to submit passports for visas to Pakistan.

Locals said the stampede was caused by the overcrowding and poor management.

This comes after softened visa regime declared by Pakistan earlier this month. Pakistan’s embassy in Kabul issued over 2,000 visas in a single day on Oct. 12, following the government’s decision to facilitate Afghan citizens, an official said on Tuesday.

On Sept. 29, Pakistan’s federal cabinet approved a new visa policy for Afghanistan to issue multiple entry visit visas to facilitate Afghan traders and citizens.
