WJ members criticize President’s appointment of police chiefs

KABUL (SW) – A number of Wolesi Jirga (lower house) members have criticized the recent appointment of 100 new district police chief by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani.

Taking part in the debate on Tuesday, Agha Rezaei, a member of the house’s Internal Security Committee, said it was against the law for the president to appoint police chief in the districts. He believed that this would led to the fall of the districts to the Taliban.

Iqbal Safi, another member of the house, described the actions of the president and the National Security Council as ‘illegal’. He said that according to the officers’ inherent law, first lieutenants could not serve as district police chief.

Reacting to the president’s move, Mir Rahman Rahmani, the speaker of the house, said that in the current situation, the officers appointed by the president cannot manage the conflict.

A few days ago, the President appointed 100 fresh officers as commanders of 100 districts in different parts of the country. The Presidential Palace has said it has selected the 100 officers from among hundreds of candidates after comprehensive evaluations.
