MONITORING (SW) – Abdullah Abdullah, chairman of the high council for national reconciliation, on Sunday met Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif in Tehran during an official trip.

Prior to his departure for Tehran, Abdullah tweeted that heading a high-level delegation, he will meet and exchange views on Afghan peace process, Intra-Afghan talks, regional support and bilateral issues with the Iranian leadership.

Spokesman for the Iranian foreign ministry Saeed Khatibzadeh confirmed his meeting with the foreign minister Zarif. “ … An independent, developed, peaceful and stable Afghanistan has always been the desire of Iran”, he tweeted, adding Iran would its best to help with the ‘genuine Intra-Afghan dialogue’.

Mujeebur Rehman Rahimi, advisor and head of media affairs at the HCNR, has said the visit follows a series of regional trips by Abdullah to gain support for peace efforts in Afghanistan.

The chairman of the HCNR is touring Iran on the heels of similar trips to Pakistan and India last week.
