50 % of Herati students infected with Covid-19

HERAT (SW) – The Health officials in Herat province claim that 40 to 50 percent of the province’s students are infected with the corona virus.

Mohammad Rafiq Sherzai, a spokesman for the provincial health department, told Salam Watandar that the findings of the department’s inspection teams from schools across the province suggest that 40 to 50 percent of the province’s students were infected with the Covid-19.

The spokesman said that the department’s monitoring teams randomly tested 350 male and female students out of which 153 proved positive. He described the health status of the infected students was ‘well’. He, however, described the overall situation as “worrying”.

Sherzai added that the number of people infected with the virus has increased in the last two weeks. He emphasized that the second wave of the virus had not spread in the city of Herat and that the victims were the continuation of the first wave of the virus.

As per official figures, out of seventy suspected cases of coronavirus, the test results of sixteen were positive.

Earlier, health officials in Farah province said that 30 percent of children under the age of five who went to hospitals in the province for treatment had symptoms of the Covid-19.

Mahtabuddin Noorzai, head of Farah’s health department, told Salam Watandar that the results of the children’s tests showed that three out of ten sick children who go to public and private hospitals had symptoms of the coronavirus.
