Zabul residents troubled by high electricity tariff

17/09/2018

QALAT (SW) – Residents of Zabul’s provincial capital, Qalat City, have blamed the power utility for charging them an inflated tariff of AFN 20 cents for one kilowatt.

Two such irritated residents, Ali Mohammad and Zer Gul, told Salam Watandar most of the dwellers here earn less than the monthly bill of electricity. They urged the government to either lower down the tariff, or arrange affordable solar or imported electricity for them.

Safe estimates suggest up to 4000 families and 1500 commercial units are connected to the power grid here.

In the meantime, Ezatullah Wahdat, director Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat, acknowledged the issues faced by the locals, however, stressed the electricity distributed here is generated by burning diesel fuel, and it cannot be sold below AFN 20 cents per kilowatt. He vowed this tariff is still lower than in many other provinces where diesel-powered electricity is distributed.

Zabul provinces is set to be linked to the electricity transmission line coming from Tajikistan.
