HERAT CITY (SW) – According to health officials in Herat province, an estimated 1748 individuals opted to commit suicide in this province in the past one year.<\/p>\n

Arif Jalali, head of the Herat Regional Public Hospital, said out of these individuals, some 27 lost their lives. He said a phenomenal 80 per cent of the people opting to end their lives were women. Head of the public hospital said consuming poison, self-immolation and hanging remained some of the ways practiced by these individuals.<\/p>\n

One of the survivors, an 18-year-old woman told Salam Watandar she wished to end her life due to forced marriage.<\/p>\n
