BRUSSELS (SW) – Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO Secretary General, has said it is too early to say if there will be a peace deal with the Taliban in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

Addressing a press conference ahead of the NATO Defense Ministers Meeting in Brussels, he said the alliance continues to help the Afghan security forces create the conditions for a peaceful solution to the conflict.<\/p>\n

“Allies have been kept closely updated by the United States. We continue to consult on the implications of a possible peace deal and how NATO can support it”, he said in connection to a meeting with the U.S Envoy for Afghanistan Reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad.<\/p>\n

He said situation in Afghanistan remains difficult, but there are efforts for peace. “What is clear is this: we went into Afghanistan together, and together we will determine our future posture.<\/p>\n

The second day (on Thursday 14 December 2019) will focus on NATO’s missions and operations, including Afghanistan, Kosovo, Iraq and maritime operations. NATO will continue to support the Afghan security forces to “create the conditions for a peaceful solution,” and to help Iraq “prevent the resurgence of ISIS, or other terrorist groups.”<\/p>\n
