KABUL (SW): A draft law for protest demonstrations and rallies has been widely criticized by members of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) and a number of civil society activists.<\/p>\n

The draft law has been seen as move to curtail civic liberties. Shah Gul Razaey, a member of the Wolesi Jirga, feared the National Unity Government (NUG) might take advantage of the summer holidays by issuing a decree in this regard that would deny the citizens their constitutional right of free speech and freedom. Sami Darray, a civil society activist, said in this regard that the new draft law is aimed at silencing people’s voice and their right to protest. He vowed the civil society would not accept an oppressive and brutal law.<\/p>\n

Dawood Naji, member of the ‘Enlightenment Movement’ also criticized the proposed law. Naji said the NUG wants to target people’s civic movements with such legal means.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Shah Hussain Murtazawi, interim spokesman for the President, has said the draft law is not finalized yet, and the second Vice President Sarwar Danish is working on it.<\/p>\n
