KABUL (SW): Dubbing the Senior Official’s Meeting (SOM) as a test for Government of National Unity, Eklil Hakimi, the Minister for Finance has said that all international commitments with Afghanistan were evaluated and the government managed to convince international community on most of the issues and aced the test.<\/p>\n
Flanked by Nicholas Haysom, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), Hakimi said this while addressing the press in Kabul on Saturday.<\/p>\n
According to him, measures to counter corruption were underway as the ministry has developed a comprehensive plan to tackle corruption. He said efforts to fairly regulate the customs that included capacity building of customs’ staff, establishing custom police and a method of sharing information with neighboring countries.<\/p>\n
He added that there would be soon two other international conferences aimed at military and civilian cooperation in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
Nicholas Haysem, called SOM as an important step, which bridged previous Afghanistan’s commitments to the current ones and said that fortunately Afghanistan could once again convince international community in providing cooperation and assistances.<\/p>\n
He added that the ministers, human rights and civil society activists expressed their opinions in this meeting, which clearly indicated how committed they were in implementing the commitments made by the international community.<\/p>\n
This was the first high level meeting since the new National Unity Government of Afghanistan presented its reform plan at the London Conference on Afghanistan that was held on 4 December 2014. The purpose of the Meeting was to review progress since the presentation of the Self-Reliance reform program, discuss key policy issues, and to jointly decide the way forward.<\/p>\n
Delegations from 41 countries and 11 international agencies along with ministers and senior officials of the Afghan Government and representatives of Afghan civil society and private sector attended the Meeting.<\/p>\n
