KABUL (SW): The mobile money pilot program registration for the Afghan Local Police (ALP) men has completed in north eastern Kapisa province, NATO said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The move is seen as a major development towards a safer, transparent payment process to the province. The project is likely to expand throughout Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
The initiative kicked off in Kapisa because the province had been relying 100 percent on trusted agents for payment, the communiqué said. Trusted agents are Ministry of Interior (MoI) appointed personnel that physically deliver salaries in cash to remote areas where banks are currently unavailable; a position that is highly corruptible and dangerous, it added.<\/p>\n
“Mobile money is a transparent payment system that will ensure Afghan police are getting paid — safely,” said Maj. Gen. Todd Semonite, commanding general, Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan. “It is another step toward secure, sustainable funding for all of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces. It mitigates corruption and will increase the confidence of our donors.”, he added.<\/p>\n
Last month, the mobile money pilot, was explained by Waheed Majrooh, Essential Function One Finance Liaison in a gathering of the “Kabul Friends of Chicago”, military and government representatives from 10 donor nations that met to strategize Afghan National Defense and Security Forces funding and reviewed progress on current initiatives meant to strengthen the country’s security institutions.<\/p>\n
