They said that they are not aware of their children’s schoolings, and lessons, adding that the school administrations and teachers are not connected with them at all.

Samira, a woman whose two kids are enrolled in a government school in Kabul said, she does not know her children’s teachers, and also she is not aware of her children’s homework because no parent’s meetings are held at her children’s school.

Samira said she does not even have the contacts of her children’s teachers. According to her, some teachers are not allowed to give their contact details to student’s families and some of them do not trust the students as well.

These families called on the Ministry of Education to take practical steps to address this issue.

However, the private schools are different. In most of the private schools, the parents-teachers meetings are held on a regular basis every month.

Yasin Zafari, headmaster of one of the private schools in Kabul said that they meet with families of students each month and their goal is to coordinate the school environment with the home environment of the students to better educate the children at both places.

Though, the parents whose children are studying in private schools said that the private schools hold monthly meetings of parents and teachers because they receive money, and is not because of concern for students or because of their responsibility.

Sardar Mohammad Rahimi, Deputy Education at the Ministry of Education said that in Afghanistan’s education system, both the council of families and council of schools’ staff are existing to increase the quality of education for students, however, most of the schools have been neglecting this principle.

Despite all the work done by the government and international partners in the field of education in the country, this important ministry is still lacking achievements and have faced problems across the country, and sticks to the old-fashioned educational system.

The old structure of the education system of the country leads to less discussion in the way in which education works. For this reason, the parents-teachers meetings and anything that causes debate on the education system has not been institutionalized.

ENDS

A number of parents said that government schools in Kabul do not hold parents’ meetings.
