GHOR (SW): Construction work on the Poze Lich Dam in Ghor province has been halted after its development contractor fled, local officials informed.

Mohammad Amin Wakil, regional director for the Hari Rod River, informed that it has been two months since work on the dam has been halted. He informed the work has been halted since the contractor ‘Russian Electro” firm fled the sight, and other bidders got stranded in legal feuds.

Wakil said the dam was supposed to be completed this year, but lack of the government’s attention towards it, and fleeing of the contractor resulted in only 19 per cent development work being completed.

Abdul Basir Qaderi, member of the provincial council, has also expressed concerns over the delay in construction of this important dam. He feared this delay would dishearten the local population. Qaderi stressed that the local population organized many demonstrations demanding completion of the dam, but the government has not demonstrated a strong will towards it.

In the meantime, Abdul Hai Khatibi, spokesman for the provincial governor, clarified that the issue has been discussed with top officials in Kabul, and it is hoped the issue would be resolved soon in cooperation with the Russian Embassy.

A while ago, guards of the Pozi Lech Dam demonstrated against non-payment of their salaries.

Upon completion, the Pozi Lech Dam can generate up to 4.5 Megawatt of electricity for the energy-starved province.
