Women’s football team set to face Jordan

31/01/2018

KABUL (SW): The national women football team of Afghanistan has reached Jordan to play two friendly matches against the host nation.

Shams Amini, member of media department of the Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF), told Salam Watandar that the two teams would face each other for the friendly matches next month. First match between the two sides is scheduled for February 02 and the second one for February 05.

The Afghan side is training in Jordan these days under the supervision of an American trainer. Under the watchful eyes of Kelley Lindsay, former U.S. national team player, Afghanistan’s national women football team has played five international matches, four of which have been won and only one lost.

Among the 25 players selected for this tour, 13 have been picked from within the country while the rest of 12 players have been selected from among the Afghan women and girls playing football in the U.S. and Europe.

The AFF aims to lift the standard of the national women’s team with such international exposures. The national women’s team played its maiden international match in 2010 against Nepal, and faced a mammoth 0-13 defeat. However, Afghanistan has managed an impressive 4-0 victory against Pakistan, but has not played since 2014. The national women’s football team of Afghanistan ranks 106th on the FIFA Ranking while Jordan stands on the 50th slot.
