Women to miss voting in Logar

02/06/2018

PUL-I-ALAM (SW):  The directorate of women affairs in Logar fears up to fifty per cent of women in this province would miss voting in the forthcoming district and parliamentary election.

In conversation with Salam Watandar, Shema Zargar, head of the directorate of women affairs, said not having identity cards, cultural impediments and insecurity are main challenges denying women the chance to vote. She stressed the provincial administration should strive to overcome these obstacles in time to pave way for eligible female voters to take part in the electoral process.

She noted the directorate of women affairs has organized a series of awareness programs in the provincial capital Pul-i-Alam and different districts, still the registration drive remains dull.

Local women rights activists, Sabira and Dewa Ahmadzai, stressed the government in coordination with the Independent Election Commission (IEC) must play its part in ensuring security and provision of necessary documents to eligible women voters in Logar.

Assuring locals of full security, Anwar Khan Ishaqzay, provincial governor, said plans are in place to improve security situation across the province. He urged Logar residents to take active part in the forthcoming polls.

Lying next to the capital Kabul, Logar remains one of the restive provinces where the voter registration drive has not taken place in up to three districts.
