KABUL (SW): A latest study has revealed that despite years of efforts, women entrepreneurs remain deprived of liberties to thrive in Afghanistan.
The study conducted by the Equality for Peace and Development (EPD) and sponsored by the US indicates that only 4% women have access to financial institutions.
It noted that communities in Afghanistan are less inclined towards women stepping out of home. The study underlined that there is limited access to market information for women entrepreneurs
According to the report, women in Afghanistan remain a marginalized group and need to be empowered to get involved in decision-making, access to markets, and access to services.
The EPD has suggested that segregated economic growth strategies based on gender should be formulated to ensure women entrepreneurs receive maximum benefit. It has also suggested to promote women networking platforms should be promoted to encompass a broader category or range of women entrepreneurs and increase awareness of women entrepreneurs on various programs.
Measures to increase women labour via literacy and vocational programs have also been noted in the recommendations.
Abdul Bari Rahman, deputy head for private sector’s growth at the Ministry of Commerce and Trade, said on the occasion that lack of access to financial institutions remains a major hurdle in this regard. He added that since most of the property documents are named after men, it makes obtaining loans further difficult.
