CHAGCHARAN (SW): Women with skills for traditional handicrafts in Ghor province lament the lack of market for the products.
A number of these women told Salam Watandar they would be more than happy if the government takes measures to develop market for their products in the province.
Farishta and Rabia, two women who have learned skills for various handicrafts, said there is literally no demand for the products they produce. They expressed optimism if dedicated stalls for women traders are established in the province they can sell shirts with handmade embroidery for at least 6 thousand afghanis each.
Mehtab Khalida, director for social and culture affairs at the directorate of women, said in this regard there are many women with good skills in carpet weaving, embroidery and many other crafts, but lack of market for their products have left many stay home.
Abdul Hai Khatibi, spokesman for the provincial governor, argued that outdated norms and marginalization of women have also forced many women to stay home in the province. He promised the provincial government would establish dedicated market for women entrepreneurs.
