LASHKARGAH (SW): Women in Helmand province have complained about facing nepotism and gender discrimination while seeking jobs in the public sector.

Tens of women with notable credentials gathered in the office of Helmand’s civil society to lodge their complaints in this regard. They charged the local authorities have turned blind eye towards the issue of women empowerment.

Nargis, Seema and Bibi Amina, three such Helmandi women, told Salam Watandar they have completed their studies, but are finding it hard to get a job. They said it is quite difficult for them even to have the jobs of teaching in the public schools.

Shahnaz Fayez, head of the Helmand civil society’s women affairs committee, said the discrimination with women and girls in this regard is unacceptable. She urged upon the provincial and central governments to take this matter seriously.

Meanwhile, Umar Zwak, spokesman for the provincial governor, promised equal opportunities for men and women would be ensured in the public sector. He added the government appoints individuals in line with the rules and regulations, but efforts would be ensured to encourage the appointment of women and girls in the province.
