Woman journalists narrate the tale of Kunduz

05/10/2015

KABUL(SW): Women have played a significant role in strengthening the press freedom in Kunduz over the past 14 years.

Their efforts in this regard in comparison to the other provinces has been exceptional but a lot changed when the Taliban captured Kunduz. Taliban looted public buildings, private property, banks, hospitals and offices of the aid organization. There were also reports about some militants committing rapes and killing innocent civilians.

Taliban, in their three days of control over the city also forced local journalists to flee. Despite all the hardships however, some brave and active women kept performing their jobs as journalists and stayed in the city and witnessed the brutality committed by the Taliban in the city. Salamwatandar reached some of these women and asked them to narrate the war situation in Kunduz.

Zarghona Hassan, director for Kaihan and Shayesta Radio Stations said that both radio stations, which worked for the youth and women, were totally damaged and the Taliban looted the equipments.

She said that the Taliban after looting the equipment, set on fire all the documents in the radio stations.

Malalay Yousefzai, director for a local radio station called Cheragh, said that Taliban looted everything and the equipment they couldn’t take with themselves was set on fire.

She further said that Taliban shot dead many women and forced families to evacuate and flee the city.

A number of other media activists who currently live with their families under Taliban control in the outskirts of Kunduz city, told Salamwatandar that Taliban have a long list of political, civil, media and religious activists with themselves and have killed many of these activists for cooperating with the government and have taken away some of them with themselves.

It is said that two days before Eid, a number of civil activists in a meeting with Omar Safi, Kunduz governor, raised their concerns over security situation in Kunduz but the governor ignored their concerns by calling it baseless.

Media activists said that there is no single radio station active in Kunduz city and all radio stations have been destroyed by the Taliban.
