MAZAR-E-SHARIF (SW): A married woman has tried to commit suicide along with her two children under suspicious circumstances in Balkh province on Sunday.
The 24-year-old woman jumped from the fifth floor of her apartment along with a 3-year-old and a 4-year-old son. All three are under treatment in the public hospital in Mazar-e-Sharif city. The brother of the woman has said her sister was mentally unstable, and that is why she tried to commit suicide.
The local attorney’s office has rejected this claim. Fawzia Hamidi, a local attorney, has said the woman had no mental disability, but was facing domestic violence which forced her to take this extreme step. She added the victim’s husband has been in the U.S. for many years and has married another woman there. Hamidi added the victim’s husband was not responding to her telephone calls for the past three days which could have compelled her to opt for suicide.
Dr. Shafique, head of the public hospital in Balkh province, has said one of the child is in critical state. Nilofar Sayar, a local women’s rights activist, told Salam Watandar the cases of violence against women are on the rise in the province. She cited absence of the rule of law as the main cause for such incidents.
