KABUL (SW): Members of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Saturday expressed concerns over an increase in number of abductions on the highways across the country.
Taking part in the debate during the general session today, the law makers stressed that the government should implement its promises in regard to safeguarding the citizens. The lawmakers particularly expressed concerns over growing insecurity in Uruzgan, Sar-i-Pul, Kunduz, Nuristan, Badakhshan and Paktia provinces.
Obaidullah Barakzai, a member of the house said in his comments that 4 districts in Uruzgan are under the siege of the Taliban since past 17 months. “Isn’t Uruzgan part of the country? The government has no strategic plan for its security”, he said.
Another member of the house, Lalai Hameedzai said that insecurity is on the rise across the country. “One part of the country gets calm another part of the country sees rise of militancy”, he noted.
The issue of Torkham crossing point with Pakistan also surfaced during the debate. The WJ members stressed that Afghanistan should have an alternate to this route to escape the losses it sustained due to the closure.
Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, speaker of the house urged the government to take effective steps towards peace and stability in the country. “Taking into consideration the national interests and peace, the government should act responsibly", he noted.
