KABUL (SW): Some members of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) in a general session on Saturday called the Electoral Selection Committee (ESC) as “illegal”.
The lawmakers noted that the Presidential decree in this regard was still under debate in the house and would be taken-up for debate next Wednesday hence the ESC cannot perform as a body.
This matter has been highlighted in the WJ at a time when the Electoral Selection Committee already held its first meeting last Thursday. In line with the Presidential decree, the Supreme Court, the Independent Administration Reform Commission, the Independent Human Right Commission, the Independent Commission for Oversight and Implementation of the Constitution (ISOIC), Journalist fraternity and civil society organizations too have introduced their representatives for this committee.
The Electoral Selection Committee is tasked to introduce commissioners for the electoral commissions.
In the meantime, Abdull Rauf Ibrahimi, the Wolesi Jirga Speaker urged the government that it should have formed the committee after Presidential decree get a clearance from the house in this regard. He emphasized that the government should not allow this committee to commence its operations.
According to him, soon it would become clear whether this committee can start its work or not.
Having seven members, the Electoral Selection Committee was formed a while ago in accordance to a decree issued by the President Muhammad Asharf Ghani
It’s worth mentioning that the differences over nomination among the civil society organisations hindered the Electoral Selection Committee affairs but finally Naeem Ayubzada was picked as the CSO representative in the ESC.
