Wolesi Jirga approves the Law against Torture

KABUL (SW): The Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Saturday approved the Law against Torture with a majority vote.

Mohammad Hussain Sharifi Balkhabi, member of the house’s commission on legal and judicial matters, said on the occasion that the Law against Torture has been ratified by the President. He added that it together with corresponding Presidential Decree comprising of 4 chapters and 21 articles had been referred to the commission on legal and judicial matters.

Mohammad Nazeer Ahmadzai, second deputy speaker of the house, was chairing the session today. He called for voting on the Law against Torture. All but one present members voted against it, hence it was approved.

Afghanistan is signatory to the United Nations Convention against Torture, and the Afghan Constitution has also endorsed components of the UN Convention in this regard.
