KABUL (SW): The Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Monday announced to cut the salaries and perks of those members failing to attend the proceedings of the house for at least 20 consecutive days.
Abdul Qadir, secretary of the house, stressed the order of the house and norms should be maintained. He added the Article 73 and the Article 119 of Wolesi Jirga Rules offer clear ways to deal with the absent members. He said such members should be deprived of the perks and privileges.
Majority of the members approved the suggestion to deprive the absent members of their perks. They urged the administrative board of the house to list the members who are permanently absent, and then share it with their respective voters in a bid to convince them not to vote such candidates again.
Zakarya Zakarya, a member of the house, stressed the members should abide by all rules. He lamented some members who roam around with armed guards.
The issue of absent members has come to the forefront as a number of sessions are adjourned due to lack of quorum.
