KABUL (SW): Pushing the government to strive for peace and stability, the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) members on Wednesday dubbed Monday’s blatant attack in Kabul as a direct assault on press freedom.
Taking part in a debate on the incident, Syed Jamal Fakori, a member of the house, said the only notable achievement of the international community and the Afghan government in the past 17 years is press freedom, and Monday’s assault in the capital’s Shash Darak area has severely damaged this gain. He highlighted that the deadly assault has forced the families of the slain journalists into further troubles, including severe financial constraints, and the government should address such matters.
The members called for proper rules and regulations for appointments in the private sector in a bid to safeguard the rights and lives of the workers.
Speaker of the house, Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, asked the members to devise a draft law for regulations of private sector employees in terms of their rights and safety. He underlined the need for such a law.
In the meantime, Abdullah Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of the National Unity Government, acknowledged while addressing a gathering marking the World Press Freedom Day in Kabul that the government has failed to ensure safety of the citizens.
This comes as 11 journalists got killed in separate terrorist incidents in the country in past one week alone.
