KABUL (SW) – The buzz over proposed interim government on Monday echoed in the Wolesi Jirga (lower house).
A number of parliamentarians opposed the idea of establishing an interim government. Among them, Abdul Qadir Qalatwaal, Abdul Qayum Sajjadi and Mohammad Ali Akhlaqi, stressed instead of thinking about establishing an interim government, efforts should be expedited to lift the skills and capabilities of the electoral commissions to ensure fair and timely presidential elections.
The MPs feared establishment of an interim government would further destabilize the country and create more impediments. They underlined that slowing down attacks against the rebels and establishing interim government would not help bring peace, but would instead harm peoples’ confidence in the state.
Based on a report by the Associated Press, the Taliban have expressed their opposition in a meeting with Zalmay Khalilzad, US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, towards the scheduled presidential elections in April 2019. It reported the Taliban have proposed to establish an interim government led by Abdul Sattar Serat.
