KABUL (SW) – A number of Wolesi Jirga (lower house) members during plenary session of the house on Monday criticized the new $ 244 million food aid program by the government.

The new program, which was officially inaugurated two days ago by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani would see millions of families across the country receive packages of basic food items worth more than $ 244 million.

The launch of the program has been criticized by members of the WJ. Members of the house said this program was in violation of the budgetary rules and would only promote corruption. They said the source of funds meant to be used as well as ways and means to spend are unclear.

A member of the house, Mir Afghan Safi said launching of the program would pave the way for corruption.

Another member of the house, Azim Kobarzai, said the MPs do not know anything about this national program hence it would be difficult to implement.

This widespread criticism of this new project prompted the house to summon acting finance minister on Tuesday.
