WJ members engage in scuffle over election for chairman

KABUL (SW) – The lingering differences over election of the chairman turned violent at the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Wednesday with MPs throwing chairs around.

An MP, who wished not to be named told Salam Watandar things went messy when a member of the house from Kabul, Amanullah Guzar, wished to escort Mir Rehman Rehmani to secure the chairman’s seat. He blamed the WJ member Gul Rehman Hamdard and some other parliamentarians revert to violence.

According to this MP, a member of the house from Kabul, Allah Gul Mujahed got injured and lost conscious in this while.

These differences erupted when Mir Rehman Rehmani and Kamal Nasir Osoli made it to the second round of voting for the chairmanship over a month ago. The interim chairman of the house, Atta Mohammad Dehqanpur named Rehmani as the winner, but a number of protesting MPs claimed Rehmani has failed to secure the minimum legal requirement of 50 per cent plus 1 vote.
