WJ irked over secrecy surrounding peace talks

KABUL (SW) – A number of Wolesi Jirga (lower house) members on Wednesday criticized the secrecy surrounding the peace talks.

Mir Rahman Rahmani, speaker of the house, said during the plenary session that the peace process is ambiguous and that not only members of parliament but also members of the government's negotiating team do not know how the process is progressing, and when would the talks begin.

Commenting on this, political analyst Mohibullah Sharif said the US government has initiated the peace process just for the election campaign of President Donald Trump.

This comes as the Afghan government claimed to have completed the prisoners’ swap process with the Taliban. However, the insurgents said on Tuesday ‘some’ of their prisoners are still not released.

Najia Anwari, spokesperson for the National Security Council, said all Taliban prisoners have been released, and now all parties, including Afghanistan's neighbors, should act honestly in the peace process. He said all obstacles have been removed and the intra-Afghan talks should begin soon.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has once again pledged to announce withdrawal of more troops from Afghanistan. As per reports, the US President will announce further troop withdrawals from Iraq and Afghanistan in the next few days.
