KABUL (SW) – The presidential palace, Arg, announced on Friday that forthcoming Wolesi Jirga (lower house) elections have been postponed in Kandahar province for another week.
The decision was taken at a special session of the National Security Council headed by the president, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani. A statement announced that the elections were postponed due to the yesterday’s attack that claimed the life of Gen. Abdul Raziq Achakzai, the Kandahar Police Chief.
The new date for polls here would be announced by the Independent Election Commission later, the statement read.
The WJ elections would take place in rest of the country on Saturday.
Gen. Raziq got killed as a result of shooting inside the compound of Kandahar governor.
Zalmai Wesa, the governor of Kandahar province, got wounded in the attack.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the incident.
