WJ demands extension of ceasefire

20/06/2018

KABUL (SW) – A number of Wolesi Jirga (lower house) members on Wednesday called for the extension of ceasefire in the country to pave way for peace process.

This comes as President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani told the participants of an historic peace march from Helmand on Tuesday the government is willing to extend ceasefire for a year if the Taliban are ready for talks.

Taking part in the debate on this matter, Obaidullah Barakzai, member of the house, said the government should extend the ceasefire with ‘our brothers’. Hailing the ceasefire, Nader Khan Katawazi, another MP, said he is ready to take the message of peace to each and every corner of the country.

Speaker of the house, Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, said on the occasion the three-day truce during Eid revived hopes for peace in the country. He said the house backs efforts for peace in the country.

However, some members of the house criticized the High Peace Council (HPC) for not taking the WJ in confidence while engaging in talks with the Taliban. Shahgul Rezaye, an MP, suggested the HPC officials should be summoned to brief the house over the matter.
