KABUL (SW): A number of Wolesi Jirga (lower house) members on Saturday demanded the speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi to resign following reports about him spending millions of afghanis from the public fund on his personal residence.
This comes as the WJ speaker Ibrahimi is on an official visit to China with a government delegation.
Abdul Raheem Ayubi, a member of the house, said on the occasion that hundreds of documents unearthing the alleged corruption committed by the speaker have been made public by the media. He pronounced this a ‘disgrace for the parliamentarians’, and urged upon the speaker to resign for violating the law.
Some member of the house also blamed the secretary of the house for his alleged collaboration in this reported corruption, and demanded he must also be held responsible. The deputy speaker, however, was not present to defend himself against these allegations.
Ramazan Bashardost, another member of the house, said on his term that the speaker should be suspended from his post until investigations against him are concluded. He said Article 11 of the Rules of Procedures of the Wolesi Jirga states that if a member or the speaker of the house is found guilty of national treason, he or she can be terminated.
Bashardost stressed that undermining the rule of law, damaging the reputation of the parliament and taking illegal advantage of the authority mean ‘national treason’. He said the speaker has committed this act, and should be terminated.
On this occasion, Humayon Humayon, deputy speaker of the house, requested the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) to look into allegations levelled against the speaker and the secretary of the house.
