WJ completes extended term on low note

19/01/2019

KABUL (SW) – At the completion of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) tenure here on Saturday, a number of MPs lamented the house has failed to deliver to the masses.

These members of the house said the WJ failed to serve the public in these eight years, and instead defended the corrupt and betrayed the nation.

Mohammad Ali Akhlaqi, an MP from Ghazni, said the members of the house should admit they have let their voters down. Amanullah Paiman, an MP from Badakhshan, said on the occasion the parliamentarians traded their conscience and brokered secret deals on minor issues in the house.

Ramazan Bashardos, representative of Kabul residents in the WJ, also vehemently criticized this tenure of the house, and said parliamentarians did nothing for their voters. He said the parliamentarians destroyed the peoples’ homes, but build castles for themselves.

It was also brought to the attention of the house that at least 80 members remained absent throughout the eight-year tenure of the house, which caused obstacles in legislation and decision making. The MPs stressed the house should highlight the impediments and shortcomings instead of glorifying the performance in past eight years.

The 16th tenure of the house for five years began in 2000, however, due to delay in holding fresh elections in 2005, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani issued decree to extend the tenure. Technical glitches, security and financial constraints and reforms in the electoral system were cited as reasons for the delay.
