KABUL (SW) – A new study revealed here on Monday up to 60 candidates for the forthcoming Wolesi Jirga (lower house) elections are not aware of their actual tasks once securing the seat.
The study was conducted by Afghanistan Youth Center for Civic and Social Coordination. Juma Khan Poya, spokesman for the AYCCS, said on the occasion the study is based on interviews with 203 candidates for the forthcoming elections.
Up to 84 per cent of the responders were male while 16 per cent were females.
He said among the participants, 24 per cent had required or higher social and legal knowledge, 33 per cent had reasonable social and legal knowledge while 43 per cent had lower or unacceptable academic credential.
The candidates were asked to choose one of the main responsibilities of the WJ members from the four option.
- Participating in the process of regulating and monitoring the performance of the executive branch
- Law enforcement
- Safeguarding the constitution
- All three
The spokesman said up to 61 per cent candidates made mistakes in their choices, and only 39 per cent chose the correct answer.
Based on the study, the AYCCS expressed fears the upcoming parliament would have a large number of members with poor knowledge about the functions of the parliament.
