WJ candidates from Kabul demand final results

24/04/2019

KABUL (SW) – The Wolesi Jirga (lower house) candidates from Kabul on Wednesday called for the announcement of final list of the successful contenders.

In a demonstration staged outside office of the Independent Election Commission – the candidates who have made it to the initial list of successful contenders – lamented the delay in issuance of final results even six months after the polls.

Two such candidates, Mohammad Khan Tarakhail and Mursal Nabizada, said the final list should be announced without further delay. The WJ candidates said their voters want them to join the maiden session of the house, and raise their voice.

In a separate gathering, a number of WJ candidates from Kabul who have failed to make it to the initial list of successful contenders, demanded the electoral commission to declare all votes cast in Kabul as void. Dawood Kalakani, one such candidate, said the protest drive would expand if their demands are not met.

Fazlulah Mumtaz, spokesman for the protesting WJ members, said until fresh polls, the former representatives of Kabul should be allowed to continue.

We wished to have the views of the electoral commission in this regard, but to no avail. The new parliament is set to take oath next week.

Former representatives of Ghazni are likely to continue until WJ polls are held in this province.
