KABUL (SW): The Wolesi Jiga (lower house) on Wednesday voted in favor of nationalizing three firms that was earlier approved by the cabinet.
These firms included sugar refining corporation in Baghlan province, a construction corporation in Helmand province and the Spinzar Corporation in Kunduz provinces.
The Helmand Corporation was one of the leading firms engaged in civil engineering projects for many years now. It used to serve under the Ministry of Water and Energy.
There is still a department working under the name of Helmand Construction Corporation under the MoWE. Nationalization of this corporation was long on the cards.
The second corporation to get the WJ’s approval for nationalization was the only sugar processing factory of the country.
The Baghlan Sugar Corporation was established back in the 1940s with the German assistance. It was up and running until the civil wars broke out in the country in the 1990s that forced its closure.
The third on the cards today was the Spinzar Corporation of Kunduz.
This corporation established in the 1970s was known for producing ghee, soap, nuts and bolts among other products. During its peak, it employed some four thousand workers.
Most of these and other corporations across the country witnessed serious damage during years of violence in Afghanistan.
Some three months ago, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met with a number of heads of public sector corporations in Kabul and assured them of effective measures in this regard.
The WJ on Wednesday also approved reestablishing security corporations associated with the Ministry of Interior.
This was earlier approved by the cabinet.
