KABUL (SW): With the arrival of winter, a number of areas across the country have witnessed snow causing road blockages.
Abdul Hameed Mubaraz, director National Disasters Management Authority (NDMA) in the west of the country told a press conference in Herat province that more than 50, 000 citizens are faced with serious challenges due to the harsh winter. He added that internal displacements in Farah, Ghor and Badghes provinces have led to high number of people at risk in Herat during winter this year.
He lamented that calls for measures to minimize the losses have fallen on deaf ears.
Heavy snow also blocked the Salang Pass, which has resulted in cutting-off Kabul’s road link to a number of provinces in the north. Gen. Mohammad Rajab, director for the Salang protection authority, told Salam Watandar the passenger vehicles have been asked to wait till the pass is cleared.
In Ghor province, road links between a number of districts and the provincial capital are cut-off due to the thunder storm and snow over the night. Khalilullah Noor, director for the department of public welfare, told Salam Watandar that they have not yet received funds to clear snow from the ministry. He vowed that all available resources would be utilized to facilitate the people during the winter.
