PUL-I-KHUMRI (SW): A local warlord has denied thousands of families in Baghlan province access to drinking water.
Elders in Nahrin district told Salam Watandar that Arbab Ramzani, a local commander, has barred the locals from tapping drinking water from a spring in the district. They added the provincial Directorate of Rural Rehabilitation and Development had put in place a water supply line from the spring to the district 10 years ago, but the local warlord has now stopped the supply of water to the community.
Mohammad Gul, a local resident, complained they are now compelled to buy water from nearby village.
Fazl-u-din Muradi, district chief, has confirmed this development. He said mediation is underway, and soon families will have access to drinking water. According to the locals, the warlord barred them from tapping drinking water last year as well, however, the issue was resolved by a Jirga (council of elders).
