KABUL (SW): The ongoing voters’ registration process by the Independent Election Commission (IEC) was criticized as ‘failed’ by a number of Wolesi Jirga (lower house) members on Monday.
Taking part in general debate on the matter, member of the house Khalil Shaheedzada said the IEC, security institutions and the Directorate of Population Census are ‘failed’ in properly executing the voters’ registration process.
Some MPs charged the IEC of discrimination and dual policy in regard to the voters’ registration process.
Findings by Salam Watandar indicate the public’s interest towards the drive is not very enthusiastic.
Karim Jamal, IEC officer in Ghazni, informed only 70 people registered themselves on the first day of registration. Similar reports arrived from Ghor, Khost, Badghes, Faryab, Jawzjan and Herat provinces.
In Kabul’s 13 district, only two people registered.
The IEC officials have blamed insecurity as a reason behind the dull response of the masses.
Mohammad Aman, IEC officer in Bamyan, said the masses are not properly informed or educated about this important process.
Separately, the Taliban have warned citizens against taking part in the forthcoming district and parliamentary elections. This comes as President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani invited the armed rebels to take part in the polls.
